Museums around the world are opening their doors today to draw attention to their social and cultural significance under the motto ‘Discover museums’.

The online exhibition ‘The millionth. Of people and thwarted plans’ is about how migration and human behaviour remain unpredictable. Even if expressions such as ‘one millionth guest worker’ suggest that migration can be counted and therefore planned and controlled, the exhibition shows the opposite. Using the example of the German ‘economic miracle’, it shows how the FRG's recruitment policy did not go according to plan. It was intended to be temporary - on the part of the state and many labour migrants. Many people stayed and Germany became an immigration society. By juxtaposing objects and stories, the exhibition shows concrete plans and how these were thwarted.

The exhibition was originally developed as an analogue exhibition and funded by the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees and Integration of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. We have now adapted it for digital presentation.
